Fashion designers Dolce and Gabbana have
been sentenced to 20 months in jail after failing
to declare $1.3 billion in income to Italian tax
authorities
Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the
fashion duo behind the Dolce&Gabbana and
D&G brands, have been found guilty of tax
evasion to the tune of more than $1.3 billion (1
billion euros).
A Milan court sentenced them to 20 months
imprisonment on Wednesday. However, the pair
are denying the charges and intend to appeal
the ruling. Due to the complex nature of the
Italian appeals process it is likely to be
protracted to the extent that the owners of the
Dolce&Gabbana fashion empire are unlikely to
spend any time in jail.
Prosecutors had argued that the pair had set
up a Luxembourg company “Gado” – an
acronym of their surnames – in order to commit
a “sophisticated tax fraud”.
Founded in 1985, Dolce and Gabbana employs
more than 3,000 people and has 250 shops in
40 countries around the world.
