A lot of medical graduates are going for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme without proper registration to practice as doctors, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has disclosed.

The MDCN registrar, Abdulmumini Ibrahim, said the council had received complaints about medical graduates who were drafted into the NYSC on the “strength of receipt of payment of application fee for full registration”.

Addressing a brief pressing in Abuja on Monday, Ibrahim said the council had communicated the NYSC to warn the practice should be discontinued.

“The practice had become a means for quacks to gain advantage into the profession”, he said.
“It is important to note that the registration is a process and is much more than the payment of the registration fees, and receipt is only an acknowledgement”.

The registrar explained that a full registration requires on average four weeks to process and graduates of medicine and dentistry can only apply for it after completing a housemanship to obtain a “certificate of experience” which will allow them to practice in the rural areas where they are posted during national youth service.

“The council is concerned students are resorting to using receipt of payment because of time pressure”, he added.

Ibrahim said NYSC has resolved to allow graduates who have begun their registration process but missed the October 28 camp into the November 25 stream while registration is being processed for those eligible before orientation camp closes.

“Those not eligible will wait for the next batch. The problem is people are in a hurry”, said Ibrahim.
